🎥 Environmental simulation testing for bicycle headlamps – up close!
The technical requirements for German national type-approval under §22a StVZO have recently been updated.
They now mandate environmental simulation tests for the approval of bicycle headlamps.
🔍 What’s being tested?
💧 IPX3 and IPX4 protection (IEC 60529):
Simulates exposure to rain or splashing water during operation.
✅ The headlamp must be switched on during testing and still function properly afterward.
These tests are conducted by ALEE at its accredited partner laboratory VOLKE Entwicklungsring SE in Wolfsburg.
🌫️ Corrosion resistance (ISO 9227):
96 hours in a salt spray chamber – required if the materials used are susceptible to corrosion.
✅ The test is passed if no functionally relevant corrosion is detected.
🛠️ These tests are now mandatory – even for products already on the market.
Existing type-approvals must be updated in the coming years to remain valid.
